No New Music — cover artwork — 2022

The Art of Sampling

About
CHANCE デラソウル is a future funk / plunderphonics artist. Upon the release of their album No New Music, I created a fan-made cover artwork inspired by the tape—which CHANCE loved so much that they licensed it from me and replaced the existing cover artwork with it. I subsequently cooked up a series of concepts for potential album-related collaterals.

challenge & Execution
No New Music is a meta-commentary on the art of sampling in music. The album embraces the idea of all art being a remix of a remix, with every track on it being made by means of sampling.

The cover artwork I created interprets this concept quite literally as it ‘samples’ the cover artworks of other iconic albums, wearing its influences on its sleeve. A set of iconic anime soundtrack album covers were ‘sampled’, reflecting their heavy influence on CHANCE’s music.

Taking this idea a step further, the project could run a limited edition drop of cassette tapes with a series of cover art variants. Each cover pays homage to an album that was a landmark either in the creative sampling of music or in their respective genres—inexplicably tying No New Music to its predecessors.

Instead of designing and selling custom merchandise for the album’s release, CHANCE could creatively up-cycle disposed-off tees. Pre-used graphic tees of other music artists can be refurbished and ‘re-branded’ by simply screen-printing the project’s icon mark on top of the existing artwork.

This is a cheaper way of producing what is essentially limited edition merchandise with each piece being a 1/1, while simultaneously re-enforcing the concept behind the project.
